Ohio Roadside Attraction

Everything that's realistic has some sort of ugliness in it. Even a flower is ugly when it wilts, a bird when it seeks its prey, the ocean when it becomes violent." ~ Sharon Tate

Flight of the Hawk Park

The Flight of the Hawk Park is a unique park. It is easily visible from US 33. However, it can only be entered from Old Logan Road. It consists of 6+ acres. The land was donated to the Fairfield County Park District in 2006, from the City of Lancaster.

The park isn’t your normal park. There aren’t trails to walk, there isn’t any playground equipment, you won’t find a shelter house. What you will find is a massive red-tailed hawk statue along with sculptures of other native Ohio animals.

The Sculptures

  • The Hawk Sculpture

The main sculpture at the Flight of the Hawk Park is a red-tailed hawk and it is enormous. It is constructed from over 3000 pieces and weighs 2500 pounds. It has a wingspan of 14’. The hawk stands on a nest that is 42’ in the air.

  • Other Wildlife Sculptures

Along with the larger than life red-tailed hawk are life-sized sculptures of other native Ohio animals. There is a turkey vulture and black vulture along with wild turkeys and white-tailed deer.

The Artist

One man designed and created all these amazing sculptures. This man is Ric Leichliter. He is a nationally known artist who is a resident of Fairfield County. His work can be found in private and public spaces across the United States. From Ohio, Texas, New Mexico to California.

Flight of the Hawk Park

Flight of the Hawk Park is wide open with no shade to be found. There are a few trees planted near the entrance and sporadically through the park. But they aren’t large enough to provide any relief from the sun. The ground is natural and grassy. It is rough and can be a little hard to walk. At the rear of the park is a small natural prairie.
